Keeping Your Data Safe When You Use GenAI

Using GenAI does not mean giving away your data, but it does mean making deliberate choices.

  • Know what data goes to the model and where it is processed.
  • Choose providers whose terms say your data is not used to train their models.
  • Limit access so people only see what they are allowed to see.
  • Remove or mask sensitive fields where you can.
  • Log usage so you can review what happened.

Start with the data, not the tool

Decide which information is safe to use, which is not, and build rules around that before the first prototype.

Security and compliance needs differ by industry, so involve your own legal or security team early.
